The Life of a Varroa Mite: From Egg to Adult

Most beekeepers recognize the reddish-brown adult female Varroa mite. Far fewer have seen what Varroa destructor looks like from underneath, from the side, or during its immature stages.

This visual reference follows Varroa destructor from egg through protonymph and deutonymph to adulthood, compares adult males and females, and highlights the anatomical features that distinguish a real Varroa mite from inaccurate or overly stylized depictions.

What does an adult female Varroa mite look like?

Adult females are reddish-brown to dark brown, broadly oval and distinctly wider than they are long. UF/IFAS reports adult females at approximately 1.00–1.77 mm long and 1.50–1.99 mm wide. Their flattened shape and ventral setae help them fit tightly against the honey bee host.

From egg to adult

Varroa reproduces inside capped brood cells. Development proceeds through egg, a six-legged larval stage that develops within the egg envelope, an eight-legged protonymph, a deutonymph, and finally the adult stage. Immature mites are pale or translucent rather than simply miniature reddish-brown adults.

The mature adult male is also easy to mistake for an immature mite: males are smaller, pale yellowish to cream-colored and rounder than mature females. They remain within the brood cell. Mature daughter females can leave the cell with the emerging bee and continue the cycle.

Why accurate identification matters

Varroa destructor is a mite, not an insect. A mature mite has eight legs and no antennae. The characteristic mature female is very flat, wider than long, with a broad reddish-brown dorsal shield and fine surface setae. Images showing six-legged adult Varroa, antennae, large visible eyes, long spider-like legs, a beetle-like body, or a tall rounded tick-like form should be treated cautiously.
