Apis mellifera ligustica comes from Italy. Italian-derived stocks are widely used for honey production and are often manageable, with substantial brood production.
Management priorities
Large colonies and prolonged brood rearing can use considerable winter food. Check stores, manage robbing risk and monitor Varroa throughout the active season. Breeder selection matters more than a color label.
Traits vary with breeding, mating, local conditions and management. A stock name does not guarantee temperament, winter survival or freedom from Varroa. Check breeder records and monitor your own colonies.
